Boots on the Ground: A Coalition Director’s Perspective
When the Alliance launched twenty years ago, Susan Papple was there from the start. As a Certified Prevention Specialist and Director of the Holly Area Community Coalition, she brought both professional insight and a local perspective.
“The Alliance was as much of a help to me as I was to them in those early stages,” Susan remembers. “We inspired each other in our drive to grow healthier communities in Oakland County.”
That partnership has only deepened over time. Susan now serves as Secretary of the Alliance Board of Directors, helping the organization stay connected to the realities of community life. “I’ve always hoped my service offers a coalition director’s view, a boots-on-the-ground perspective,” she says.
She’s watched the Alliance grow from just a handful of organizations to 21 coalitions strong. To Susan, this expansion represents more than numbers. It’s a visible sign of commitment to prevention and wellness. “In my life’s work with youth, I’ve found prevention is the best way to reach kids and guide them to make positive choices.”
The Alliance’s role, she emphasizes, goes beyond funding. “Without the Alliance, I think many coalitions would not be able to exist. A paid staff is crucial, and the Alliance has provided this for many.” Just as important is the hands-on support that includes programs like ReNEWed Jr and the Alliance Thrive Over 55, outreach tools like brochures and fact cards, and, perhaps most valuable, the chance to connect with 21 coalitions across the county.
Susan also admires the Alliance’s holistic approach. “They work throughout Oakland County to prevent drug misuse, support recovery, provide naloxone to reduce harm and overdose deaths, and promote wellness education. All of these are so important to a healthy community.”
The Alliance is grateful for Susan Papple’s leadership, her decades of service, and her grounded insights.
